MAGIC AT MEYERS BEACH BOOK 3
CHAPTER ONE
Theos
Clipping the wings of my fairy subjects will no doubt make me the most hated king in the history of fairy kings. I take that back. Grounding is a better choice of words, since my measure has nothing to do with the unspeakable act of removing a fairyâs wings. Itâs only a prohibition on flying. But, regardless of what they call it, theyâll hate me.
Taking away such a treasured pillar of the fairy lifestyle is unfortunate, especially following the unpopular round of fairy dust rationing I had to impose a short time earlier. Everyone has been on edge for a long time. But due to the invasion of the Third Kingdom next door, even fairies can understand that we canât have everyone flitting around and getting caught in the mayhem.
The ban is also a temporary safety measure. Without the restriction, fairies might accidentally fly off too far and discover that they donât have enough juice to return. And while nobody likes the cutbacks, my experts tell me that for the time being, the clampdown on flying will cut our outlay of dust in half.
These efforts will also free up precious supplies for what fairies need it for most: their regular dustings. Granting wishes and sweeping away peopleâs bad dreams consumes a lot of energy, and routine maintenance infuses them with magic and keeps fairies robust and sharp. The dusting also ensures strong, healthy wings and keeps them lubricated so they can pop out and retract smoothlyânot that theyâll need to worry about that for now.
These drastic measures remind us every day that the heartless individual who caused this pandemic is still at large and very dangerous. Responding with violence has always been our kingdomâs last resort, but Zsombor, the Third King, and I will be putting our heads together to work out a strategy to take them out. Of course, we need to identify and then find them first.
Ever since we learned about the contamination, my genius brother, Alias, has been working like mad to make us new dust. Considering that heâs working with only five of the nine ingredients that he needs to produce the good stuff, weâre all amazed at what heâs come up with already. His latest formulation has actually restored life to our weakest fairies. And while itâs giving a modicum of vitality to the others, until we find the rest of the ingredients, it will lack the power to accomplish much more.
Never before have fairies faced such a challenge, but I can think of no one more prepared to tackle it than he. Heâs a perfectionist, though, and needs constant reminding that despite a few hiccups, what heâs created so far has been nothing short of a miracle.
In the meantime, the other two kingdoms have begun pooling their reserves, which weâve all started sharing.
